It’s another beautiful spring day in Wake Forest, North Carolina. You see more and more people popping outside trying to soak in the long desired sun. My husband and I took our rescue dog Harper to a nearby dog park around North Raleigh called Millbrook Exchange Park. She loves the park because it allows her to freely run around and burn a good amount of energy. Plus she gets to hang out with other dogs, which she absolutely adores.
People in the Triangle start recognizing Harper due to her very long “hound like” bark when she is playing with other dogs. I often strike a good conversation with new people at the park while watching our furry friends. We talk about dogs, politics, things to do in and around Wake Forest, and even marriage counseling and mental health. It usually goes something like this:
New friend: ”What a cute dog you got, I love her bark. Are you from Raleigh area? What do you do?”
Me: “I am actually a marriage counselor in Wake Forest, so I work with people struggling with relationships through marriage counseling Raleigh NC
And then….. do you want to guess what is the most common response I hear?????
New friend: “Ohhhh marriage therapist…..I wish I met you several years ago when I was going through a divorce..”
Every time when I hear this, it breaks my heart! Yet, the research data proves this point: on average, couples struggling in their marriages wait for eight years before they seek professional help! Eight freaking years!
That’s a VERY long time to be miserable and unhappy! And do you know why couples wait this long before looking for a marriage therapist? I can’t speak for all couples, of course, but what I hear most often from people in my Raleigh and Wake Forest community is that they didn’t know how to find a marriage counselor. It’s not something they felt comfortable discussing with their co-workers or friends because there is still a lot of stigma around mental heath. And it makes so much sense! So, if you or your loved ones find themselves in a similar situation, let me provide three easy ways that you can use to find a good marriage therapist.
1. Ask Your Individual Therapist For A Recommendation For Marriage Counseling Raleigh NC (if you have one)
Most therapists who do individual work with clients do not have the training and expertise (and often times, the passion) to provide marriage counseling. But what they do have is a lot of therapist friends, all of which have a wide range of specialties. So there is a good chance they might know an excellent couples counselor. Plus, if you like your individual therapist and they recommend someone they trust, chances are this recommendation might be a good fit for you since like minded people attract each other.
2. Ask Your Friends If They Have Heard Any Personal Success Stories Involving Specific Marriage Counselors
Instead of going online and finding a random therapist on google (nothing wrong with that, but I am just saying), you can ask people you really trust. Chances are, they are in therapy or have been in therapy at some point of their lives, and they probably know a good couples therapist for you. And if not, maybe you can use this conversation to open up about your relationship struggles and get friend support.
3. Ask Your Primary Care Doctor For Trusted Recommendations of Marriage Counselors
We, therapists, often collaborate with multiple medical providers to ensure we provide the best care to our clients. Plus, it also ensures everyone is on the same page when it comes to treatment and medication management. For example, my clients know that I have a very collaborative approach and I regularly (about every 2 months) reach out to their psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and even family attorneys.
